WITH AN INTRODUCTORY FILM ON THE FAVELA PAINTING PROJECT featuring local artist in residence Dre Urhahn (video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0yvyVKFNAo).
The University of Pennsylvania Department of City Planning in conjunction with Diverse Design and the Planner's Network present two films around the theme of housing. From "favelas" in Brazil to the infamous mega-modern housing project, Pruitt-Igoe, this film evening will explore the history of low income housing and the rapidly expanding informal settlements occurring around the world. The legacy of Pruitt-Igoe remains relevant for designers and those interested in urban issues and the built environment. In addition there will be a short film exploring the capacity of art to provide innovative solutions for development in Brazil. Ultimately, these companion films document the narratives of people and where they live.
These films will inform a discussion on the importance of housing within the complex urban realm.
