The Event Program

  • Spark

Spark is an engaging behind-the-scenes documentary about the dreams and challenges of Burning Man and its unique culture of participatory art. Each year, 60,000 people from around the globe gather in a dusty windswept Nevada desert to build a temporary city, collaborating on large-scale art and partying for a week before burning a giant effigy in a ritual frenzy. Rooted in principles of self-expression, self-reliance and community effort, Burning Man has grown famous for stirring ordinary people to shed their nine-to-five existence and act on their dreams. SPARK takes us behind the curtain with Burning Man organizers and participants, revealing a year of unprecedented challenges and growth. When ideals of a new world based on freedom and inclusion collide with realities of the “default world,” we wonder which dreams can survive. More information on the official website for Spark Pictures.

Imagine traversing the hot playa and you spy a red and white bolt of color of in the distance. Golden paddle wheels turn in the late summer sun and you are drawn to the sound of the high pitched whistle. As you approach the Playa Queen you will see an ornate piece of art with arches, fanciful balusters and gilded moldings of this representation of a Sacramento Gold Rush era steam powered side-wheeler riverboat. As you board the lovely Playa Queen you will be transported back to a time when the riverboat steamers made their way through the waters of the Delta and Sacramento River delivering gold-fevered “Argonauts” from San Francisco to seek their fortunes in the foothills east of the Sacrament Valley. On the first deck are the twin paddlewheels and the saloon, where Black Rock citizens find refuge from the sun and dust while enjoying murals painted by local artists, resting and partaking in the company of all who board the Playa Queen. The white railed top deck provides every passenger a place to enjoy the playa view and to interact in the pilot house by steering the Playa Queen with the Captains wheel in the direction of your imagination and blasting her ships horn to alert all of her presence. As darkness falls, the crew arrives to light up the night sky with flame effects from the twin smoke stacks. The Playa Queen comes alive with dazzling colored lights and the paddle wheels give the illusion of propulsion, inviting citizens from around the city to come aboard and enjoy the ride. The Sacramento Region was selected by the Burning Man organization to design, build, and transport the Playa Queen to Black Rock City. There she will be rebuilt, enjoyed, and ceremoniously burned within the 2013 Circle of Regional Effigies (CORE) along with 23 CORE honorariums from around the world. Our dedicated, all volunteer project team and the CORE community can only make this happen if we raise the necessary funds for materials, equipment, and transportation. To that end we arranged for this fundraising event, where we invite you to participate with us by making a donation to the Playa Queen project in addition to your ticket purchase. We will gladly reward your generosity with a hug, our heartfelt gratitude and if you choose, with one of our limited edition Playa Queen rewards.
