ABOUT OUR PROGRAM
Girls on the Run is a life-changing character development program for girls that utilizes the power of running to provide pre-teen girls the tools to celebrate their bodies, honor their voices, and recognize their unique gifts. More that just a running program the mission of Girls on the Run is to educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. This is not just about athletics. Through our focus on positive emotional, social, mental, and physical development girls in grades 3-8 are empowered to discover the confidence they need in those critical pre-teen years and beyond. It is as much about good health, friendship, positive body image and self-esteem as it is about running. Each Girls on the Run program (grades 3, 4, & 5) and Girls on Track (grades 6, 7, & 8) is led by a team of trained coaches who share the joy of running while motivating the girls. Topics include positive communication, cooperation and team building, healthy nutrition, goal setting, and community service.
The Girls on the Run curriculum is based on experiential learning activities designed to teach participants about topics related to self-respect and healthy living. Each meeting begins with a getting-on-board and warm up activity that brings the girl's focus onto the day's topic. The warm-up is followed by a stretching routine that allows for topic-related question and answer time. Then, during the workout period, the girls participate in a variety of running activities that are camouflaged in a game or team goal.Afterwards, cool-down stretching is then combined with participant asked and answered questions. The three-part curriculum is taught by certified Girls on the Run coaches.
- Part 1: Understanding themselves and setting personal goals.
- Part 2: Learning skills to get along in a group.
- Part 3: Examining their responsibility to the community.
